Screen Shot 2014-06-13 at 6.51.45 pmIt seems that the veterinary drug, diclofenac, that has wiped out vultures in India and the surrounding region is now going on sale in Italy and Spain (the latter is home to most of Europe’s vultures). There is little doubt that many vulture species commonly found in Europe (along with eagles and probably others) will be similarly susceptible to diclofenac poisoning.

In India, this drug is thought to have been responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of vultures, around 99% of the population of several species – pushing them to the very edge of extinction. I have written elsewhere about this tragedy and the ripples of environmental and human harm that it has given rise to (and here).

Birdlife International are calling for a global ban on this drug. You can check out their campaign here.
